The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of South Dakota invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in Biological Anthropology, to begin August 19, 2019. For applicants at the rank of Associate Professor, tenure will be considered, based on credentials and experience.
The candidate will be expected to teach introductory and upper-level courses in physical, biological, and forensic anthropology, and to develop and teach courses related to programs in forensic anthropology. Teaching online courses may be required. Excellence in teaching is expected, both in the classroom and in mentoring students outside the classroom. An ongoing research agenda is assumed.
Qualified applicants may also be considered for the position of Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. The department seeks an effective, practical leader with a clear vision for the disciplines of Anthropology and Sociology within the liberal arts and sciences, as well as an ability to communicate that vision to multiple constituencies. The chair will be responsible for providing leadership for the department, representing the department’s interests in the College of Arts & Sciences, recruiting faculty and students, developing and maintaining a schedule of course offerings, conducting program assessment, managing the fiscal resources of the department, evaluating and mentoring faculty, and driving program development.
A Ph.D. in anthropology is required. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching experience and demonstrated scholarly expertise in biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, or medical anthropology. The department would also welcome the ability to teach interdisciplinary courses in collaboration with such areas as Sustainability, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, or the University Honors Program.
